The last Romantics – the Liechtenstein composer Josef Gabriel Rheinberger and his musical network

The Liechtenstein composer and teacher Josef Gabriel Rheinberger (1839–1901) was highly regarded during his lifetime and his music was performed in the world’s great concert halls. In Munich he taught over 600 pupils from many different countries. His friendship and extensive correspondence with musicians, composers, publishers, painters and poets reveal a wide network. This exhibition focusing on the Late Romantic Period underlines the diverse relationships that existed between artists and the arts during the second half of the 19th century. “The last Romantics” showcases the many facets of an underrated world and a forgotten episode in the history of music.
